artemis' shed
24 May 2011
.There is someone coming to take some photos of my shed this week, so, I realised i might need to tidy it up a bit. Then i remembered that i had not painted the floor properly in the beginning {I just slapped on some emulsion and then walked on it before it dried, leaving a grubby footprint, doh} So i decided to empty my entire shed contents into the garden and paint the floor. I should have taken photos of this because you will not believe the amount of stuff that came out of a 4 x 6ft shed!
Then i thought, I've got too much stuff, i got all ruthless chucking things in bags, one for the bin and one for the charity shop. It was a spectacular event. Anyway, i painted the floor, re-arranged my desk and shelves to different places, put all my bits of fabric neatly in the shelves, sat back with a cuppa tea and thought 'yes, this is how i want to live my life' minimalist {well, kind of}.
ok, so I know it might not look that different to you, but to me its 100 times better, oh yes indeedo.
But, anyways, GUESS what!?
Nao has bought his own little shed too! Its going to be his leather workshop as he likes to find nice old leather bags in the market and make them all like new again. It will be the same size as mine but I am sure it will look a tad more masculine. We are thinking up some kind of intercom system, like, baked bean cans and a bit of string. Maybe we might not ever see each other again? Might have to lure him out with a slice of Victoria sponge cake.
I will keep you posted.
Also, keep meaning to tell yous, but in April and a bit of May, we raised just over £2000 for Kesennuma school for autistic children that was washed away in the Tsunami. We are still gathering money at our Tokyo shop that is many time more than this, so we will really have a good wallop of monies to help get the school their own new building. Thank you all so much for buying our Sakura necklace, we actually ran out of stock within one month! Fantastico! Hopefully I can let you know the grand total from Tokyo soon.
All of Nao's family are doing well all things considered, and Nao's little nephew, who was born just days after the tsunami, is so unbelievably cute and hopefully oblivious to all the nasty things that happened, his mum timed it well I think : )
gardener's world
12 May 2011
.
getting quite chuffed with how our garden is shaping up this spring, its full of green things instead of brown things. a recent garden centre purchase was the pale lilac flowers above, called Nemesia i think? they smell like vanilla cream cakes.
pot-tastic!
and we are harvesting a bumper crop of salad, radishes and herbs.
...peas, beetroot and spring onions on the way too!
{although it looks like i have some competition with a certain Miss N !}
If the whole world fell down tomorrow, I think I could survive on radishes alone.
RUST wedding rings now available online
1 March 2011
Hooray! this has taken me a good while...can't quite believe how many photos I have taken in the last few weeks, but my eyes are a bit skew whiff to say the least.
Now you can buy our RUST wedding rings via the Internet! All over the world {except Japan, sorry Japan, but you will still have to visit our Tokyo shop to place an order}.
It isn't the full range by any means, there are a few reasons for this, but mostly because we don't have all the samples in stock here in the London, but I hope to be adding some more options as we go along.
On average the rings take 3 weeks to make, or 6 weeks for red gold {excluding delivery time} just to give you an idea. Please see my 'Ring Buying Guide' for lots of helpful {I hope!} informations.
Also, I'm thinking to add some of these rings to our regular jewellery shop too, because they don't have to be wedding rings, a ring is a ring right?
Well, its all up and running, so go and take a quick squizz if your having a tea break or the like!

homemade christmas crackers...
23 December 2010
.
we must be utterly crackers to stay until 10.30 at night at the workshop, designing a template for some xmas crackers, especially when there will be only us two for dinner!
xmas office.
I began making the paper crowns, this bit was easy peasy, I used a crown that I nicked from the dinner table as a guide. Just fold up the tissue paper like a concertina and you can make six at once!
I made purple and white ones as it was left over from our present wrapping. I stamped them in gold with our wedding stamp. difficult to see in these photos but it looked better on the purple.
then the jokes! also quite pointless as Nao never seems to get jokes {lost in translation maybe?} and I end up laughing to myself like an idiot. I think he got this one though...
i liked the minimal monochrome look of the prints, so just used my new favourite string we found the other day.
for the snaps, we took apart some bought crackers {sainsbury's £1.99} as we'd left it too late to order them on the Internet {you can buy them from Ebay cheap as chips} they were from tiny tree crackers so we had to lengthen them a bit.
i bought some pressies from a shop near our workshop called Magma, but if I'd had the time, i would have collected small things from the flea market. {a note for next year!}
I didn't buy enough pressies so we settled for my favourite...Baileys truffles...
Unimaginable Creatures Christmas Crackers!
hmmm, I wonder if we will have the heart to pull them all? I guess it depend on how much wine we drink on xmas day!
if you are one of our poor family and friends, you may be shocked at the lack of xmas cards {and pressies, oops!} from us this year! we apologise greatly, we can only assume that all the wedding invitation making in august, has sapped our enthusiasm for making cards this year!
we are going to hibernate from all outside contact this xmas...not sure why? maybe it was a tiring year what with moving home in march, moving business in april/may, going to Japan and getting married in august, all the time running two business, blimey I feel tired just typing all that! time to just eat, sleep, and pull crackers!!
I don't know why, but we've really gotten into this christmas malarkey, I'm even going to try and make a christmas dinner {meatless though, Nao eats meat but seems to prefer the idea of my Leek and Elemental pie instead!}. so, we finished our christmas crackers this afternoon, we made 8 in total.
We got the idea from Katy, who, whilst we met up for a dinner, told me about a cracker making workshop she went to recently, and said how she really got into it and it was such a laugh. The way she described it made me feel all creative too!
So that evening we stole one end of a cracker from our dinner party, and worked out the rest of the template on paper. We then photocopied the template on the backs of some prints we made of those 18th century book illustrations we used for our RUST jewellery display.
cutting them all out was a bit of a job, I have to admit, but it was very exciting to see how they looked when rolled up!
mine were a bit scruffy compared to Nao's faultless Japanese precision as usual.

tiny acorn
28 November 2010
.
so, on this rather chilly weekend, we have been surprisingly productive at the same time doing very little and eating mince pies and roast potatoes, pretty much how I want to live the rest of my life actually!
In fact we found some lovely items in the antiques market that will soon be available in RUST... a little vintage acorn charm and some more foxes. But I thought it would be nice to have our own pieces instead of always looking for vintage ones. So that was our original inspiration for fox and acorn.
some before piccies {actually of the another acorn I made which didn't like! but I didn't take photos of the one above but you get the idea}...
this wax is green instead of blue as it is slightly softer, I think I prefer the harder wax, but the green is a little less brittle I think.
So these things I'm carving should be a complete collection available in the New Year. I'm very excited to see how they look in gold and silver!
Other news in junkaholics life:
xmas decorations going up soon, really looking forward to our first xmas in our own flat and with our cat too! RUST open days still to be confirmed, Bucket Tree due to be updated this week, AND getting EXTREMELY excited at the prospect of owning our own house very soon, with stairs and rooms instead of just two rooms to live in. Its not for certain yet but that doesn't stop me dreaming!
Yesterday I took photos of all our new RUST jewellery collections to put on our online shop, and today Nao has begun uploading them. It will be a few more days before we can launch them, I'll announce it on here and on our RUST facebook page and twitter.
Whilst he was doing that, I did some more wax carving. After making my first piece the other day {see here} I felt all inspired, and made a list of thing to make, and this acorn and leaf was top of the list. It is also about 1cm big.In fact we found some lovely items in the antiques market that will soon be available in RUST... a little vintage acorn charm and some more foxes. 21 November 2010
Blimey I have been so lazy this weekend, haven't moved much from my bed actually!
The week at work has been very busy what with the new collection I'm making...nearly there!
These letters are actually from one of our very first women's collection from 2006 {ish} and looks like they are still being ordered in Tokyo {thats where these are going} They are designed to hang on that necklace. We found those letters in the market. They were originally carved from Ivory, and we casted them in silver. Most intricate items of jewellery are casted {it would be way too time consuming to carve each piece individually} and most of the time they started life as a block of wax.
There are experts who specialise in just carving, making charms and rings etc... or now even laser carving machines, but thats too technical stuff for me to comprehend!
This weekend, I had a go for the first time carving in wax to make a mould. Its good fun and i did it on a tray in bed!
I made a fox's face...
it is about 1cm big. We might go ahead and make a mould from it and then, if it looks any good, you can buy one!
I'm thinking tiny diamond eyes perhaps? mounted on a little ring or on a fine chain?
I used some tools that came from an old watchmakers tool box that we also found in the market, although i think there are proper tools that you can buy too. Also, the wax is especially made for this kind of carving, it takes tiny details and is quite hard. Now I'm busy thinking what to make next, a bird maybe?
