knitting and a new dress (for both of us)

1 April 2014

A few things occurred lately. They are not of great significance but then, thats quite how I like things to be to be honest! Firstly, I knitted a snood/scarf/neckwarmer type thing. I'm quite chuffed with it as it really is warm and very very soft. It's 90% alpaca and 10% cotton (I think). I was so chuffed that I made my own label (with the dreams that one day I will start a knitwear company - don't laugh). I used a fabric ink pad and rubber stamps.

Another pleasant thing happened when I purchased this lovely dress from the very talented Isabel Knowles. I have been lusting after her dresses for a long time, so I'm so pleased to finally own one.

It's so beautifully made.

and this is the same dress inside out, as I wanted to show you the amazing lining.

...and this little cub has a dress which I found the other day in a vintage shop. It is actually from Boots, circa 1980 (made in Britain). In fact I have been collecting quite a little collection of 70s/80s clothes for the littley as they are such amazing colours and cuts from that era for kids. So much more imaginative that what shops stock today. I mean black floral fabric for a 12-18 month old? Bring back 70s fashion I say!

p.s. is it just me, but I have been falling for April Fools jokes all day. I feel like such a plonker...I'm not going to look at Facebook for the rest of the day.

  1. I feel like I had every variation of that dress possible as a child. Most likely all hand-me downs. I have one particular one that was black with varying shades of flowers, some red, the same lace collar and a red ribbon around the waist, same cut. My mother is a total tomboy so I can never understand why she dressed me in such girly flowery lacey ribbony dresses all the time.

Ah, I too have a dream of having a knitwear label someday... maybe kidlet knits. I love knitting for my girls and dressing them in clothes made with love. I also love collecting old florals for Anouk and Delphi... apart from the ethical factor (we avoid buying clothes made in sweatshops) the designs and patters are so gorgeous!

  6. Lovely makes. I hear you about 1970s kids clothes. My mum would dress us in dark prints and midnight blue velvet. At the time I hated it because all my friends were in candy stripes etc but looking back on photos we looked fab! We've always had dark hair and photos of us running through woods in black polo neck jumpers and plum red velvet troussers make me want to dress like that now - oh I do. Hurray for Mummas everywhere! 7. Ooh, wonderful snood! I always look like such a knob in massive scarves (I have a pinhead!), but you totally pull it off. Love both dresses too. Your blog is so inspiring and refreshing Artemis :)

  8. My mum used to make floral dresses like that for me when I was a littleun in the 1970-80's. Much nicer than the slogan t-shirts little girls seem to be dressed in these days. She looks gorgeous.

  12. such a beautiful dress...I brought a striped blue and white apron in my local vintage market with big pockets, i wear it over my clothes and put a frilly slip underneath...im not very good on my sewing machine but i'd like to copy the design. And maybe try and make a smaller one for my daughter...My mother was doing some research and found out my ancestors came from the isle of white, we've never been but one day id love to plan a trip for my mother. I grew up on an island, but on the East coast...now in Devon...i seem to follow the seas. Happy belated birthdays!!!!...your blog is lovely, kazzy ;0)

I wish I could find cute little second hand outfits for my little ones! Or have the time to learn to sew. The second hand shops here don't have those types of things. I really do wonder where all the clothes from my childhood and from my friends got to because they certainly aren't lying around the thrift stores here! I love the fabric on Pehr's dress--it reminds me of favourite bedspread I ever had. It is now the blanket in my Marigold's tent--pretty ratty but I can't get rid of it I love it so much.

PS the scarf is lovely too--and you're little dress. !!!
