summer/autumn catch up

2 November 2022

I realised that I have not updated here since May! It has been a very busy summer and autumn, and we made the most of the beautiful weather. I usually post to my instagram account, so you catch me up there if you are interested in what we got up to.
This August we celebrated two years of Only Through Shadows, my little jewellery business. It's a special time for us. We made a big cake with lots of fruit in it, and the kids brought their toy pups along too.

...and then, after a very long wait, we finally got our own pup. Meet Otter...

(I lovingly made that linen crate cover, but, alas she is yet to enjoy the comforts I have provided in there, and prefers to be on the sofa instead...I'm working on that!).
She has been with us for five weeks now, and it has taken me most of that time to adjust to the mayhem that dogs bring...I think I am getting the hang of it now, and she is doing well with her training (well, mostly and only if tasty treats are being offered otherwise not interested). My daughter is her dog mum, she loves her to bits even though she is very naughty and bites holes in her clothes.

So amongst the chaos that is our lives trying to exist with a cute land shark puppy, I have also been working and producing jewellery. Here are some of my latest additions to my shop. Some are new from a few months ago as I forgot to update them here...you can see plenty more in my shop.
Click here> Only Through Shadows I also have a little journal that I update over on my jewellery site too.

If you are wondering what the hell a cat-person is doing by getting a dog, well I have asked myself that too! There are lots of reasons but mainly I needed the company and the physical exercise, as I had been feeling not quite well in the last year or so. It is true that animals help in so many ways, they really do, and I already feel a lot happier generally, and feel motivated to go for walks and socialise more. She's my therapy dog!
I also believe that pets are important for children and we feel like more like a family of four now.
She is a lot of hard work but we are both learning a lot along the way...I think she feels at home here.

Thank you for checking back here to this old blog of mine, I always appreciate it and I will try and post a bit more often because I think it's a bit sad what is happing to social media, and there is something nice about sitting down and reading a blog post I think. Bye for now!
Artemis x

thank you for this update. We have managed to get two dogs in the last few years after being cat people (we also adopted 2 rescue cats, so utter chaos) and it has been hard work, and continues to be, but we love and adore them. From non-animal people to obsessed animal people, it changes your mindset definitely. Also love your new additions to the shop, hoping one day I can buy one of your lovely pieces (or more )

Hello Artemis, I have been reading your blog from well before you had the kids and when you had Plimsoll and I have seen how your family has grown. Otter looks properly mischievous, and a dog is very good for one's mental and physical health. I've had two dogs over two decades, and when I was super busy with an office job. Having to walk my dog in the morning and at night gave me a reason to go out as well and meet neighbors. You and I are opposite in that now I have cats! and I've never had a cat in my life. I work from home and I find they suit my present lifestyle. Especially during the pandemic having kittens to make me laugh kept me sane. I enjoy your blog posts as always. -Rowena (@simple.good.beautiful)

  21. Otter is just gorgeous! We adopted a puppy during lockdown who was hard work and we loved so much but our son is allergic so we rehomed her :( It still stings. My son has a cuddly toy that goes everywhere with him, an otter he named Otter <3

Love that Otter completed your family . Dog's teach us so much , mine is at present asleep in my bed !😆 I have had a dog in my life in there many shapes for 60 years now and I only have one regret , that is that they aren't as long lived as me !! In fact I don't think I have ever met a dog I haven't liked ! Sadly I cannot write the same about people ... Lovely to hear from you xx

  25. Congratulations on your new arrival Otter and celebrating two years of your own business. Success! dogs are alot of work, but bring so much joy. Keep up with the training, A well behaved and adjusted dog is so wonderful to be around. We taught our (old) dog lots of tricks from just watching youtubes. Everyone (human and not) need movement and stimulation. Thanks for posting, I do love a good blog post and so happy to see how you are all thriving.

  28. I used to read and enjoy so many crafting blogs and of all sorts - some for tips and some just because I liked seeing the things people created and reading a little about the people who made them and sometimes their immediate families. Hardly any of the blogs I followed still exist and I checked yours recently but how pleased I am to see you have now posted an update! Looking through the chink in the curtain of others lives and work, is a pleasant interlude in a sometimes fraught or dull day and I thank you for that - congratulations on the 2nd anniversary of your 'new' business and bon continuation!

  29. Nice to see you back on your blog. Otter is gorgeous and you are completely spot on, dogs are such good therapy aren't they, apart from anything else they drag us out into the great outdoors no matter what the weather is chucking at us, and you get to chat to so many people that wouldn't give you the time of day if you didn't have a furry friend at the end of a lead.

Otter is adorable! And I totally agree with you about what's happening with social media, I've been thinking a lot about reviving my old blog. Social media now is so disposable, it's very sad.

Always so lovely to read a blog post of yours! Especially when it has a puppy in it too!
We just became puppy parents as well. I laughed out loud when I read that you TOO call yours a Land Shark (snap! 😂) Our Miniature Dachsund is called Banksy and I couldn’t agree more that they are therapy. It’s made me so much more willing to get outside and make an effort to be friendly to other people. I think the pandemic has a lot to answer for when it comes to the collective sadness many of us are feeling. I can only imagine how wonderful it is to see your kids band together to love on this bundle of joy (and energy!) Here in Perth we have many fenced off dog exercise areas and it’s been both wonderful and challenging, taking our pup to meet new dogs and learn to play with them properly. Watching a huge dog play with a mini dog is very nerve wrecking!
But as you said - you learn a lot!
Here’s to a wonderful festive season where you get to cosy up with a bundle of unconditional love. I’ll be on the beach with mine and I’ll be wishing it was cold (call me crazy but I’m a winter bod) so I’ll be envious of Otter and a roaring fire!
    Warmest Regards
    ANGY from Perth, Australia
