If you really want to feel lost in a dream world, then I think Dartmoor is the place to go. It is like a wonderland, a lush and fertile place, where things grow out of stone and animals are free to roam.
You are never far from the delicate sound of running water over stones, or a bleating lamb.
...and it is vast.
I went to Dartmoor last summer and totally agree with you. So easy to lose the crowds in high season, too. A magical place.
