a little road trip

31 May 2012

.

this weekend we managed to get away for a few days in the sun. We headed of in a westerly direction in our camper van...

and ended up at our fave campsite in Dorset. When we arrived the little sign was missing from the road side, and the field itself was empty. We had dark thoughts that the site had closed down, and I felt a small tear well up in my eye.

Nao is as bold as brass, and suggested we venture into the farm house and ask if we can stay. I was pretty embarrassed, but did it anyway, and the friendly farmer was sitting at his dining table and said of course its open, just make yourselves at home! What a Gent. His peacock even did his shimmy just for us.

I was so happy to see the guinea fowls were still mouching about too.

that night was glorious and we had the whole campsite to ourselves. We cooked up some grub. Nao had mussels, and I had smoked mackerel.

next morning we went off to another favourite place, Lulworth Cove...

after another extremely relaxing evening, we went off exploring the many beaches of south Dorset, and even reached Devon.

We stopped off at Lyme Regis, a beautiful Regency town originally, but now very touristy sadly.
I almost did a grab and run with this mutt.

we had fish n chips on the beach like every other resident and visitors or Lyme Regis...a very nice atmosphere I have to say.

another mutt that nearly ended up in the back of our camper...

we had a pasty on the beach at Beer the next day...

Beer is in Devon, its quite nice, and good for watching people launching boats whilst sipping tea on the beach.

on the way back to London we passed through Somerset and Wiltshire, and we saw that street from the Hovis ad...

and Stonehenge appeared from nowhere...

Splendid! I hope to get away again soon, maybe for longer next time ; )

  1. All looks lovely, this was more like a Grand Tour rather that just a short get away (cute black dog btw).

  2. Wow, you make camping look so dreamy and you picked the perfect weekend for your road trip. I live in Somerset, about 45 minutes from Lyme Regis - it is such a great place and has an amazing atmosphere. It's always busy but better in winter when it's cold and blustery and the waves are crashing over the cobb. x

  10. Ah lovely Lyme... You saw it at its rush hour! Best time is in the autumn with empty beaches and clear skies.

  11. Also my first comment - which is quite terrible because I adore your blog. What an amazing weekend. My husband's family are from Somerset and our visits are usually in mid winter. So weird to see Beer with all the deck chairs out! And Lyme Regis is quite pleasant on a blustery winters day.

Would love to know your special camping spot ?? !

Lovely post. I've just finished reading "The French Lieutenant's Woman" which is set in Lyme and is a completely engrossing read. It has made me want to visit Lyme to see where Sarah stood on the cob braving the crashing waves. Wonderful.

That little black pooch is a patterdale terrier - or definitely has bits of it in him! I ♥ them.

Wow, you've reached my neck of the woods. This is home to me! We were also on the beach at Beer & Lyme over the weekend (with fish & chips!).....so many tourists in Lyme these days, nicer in the winter. My husband proposed on the cobb & our wedding reception was held in the rather shabby but lovely art deco marine theatre. Did you stop at Seatown? it looks like it in the pics, hope you are keeping well...only another 4 more weeks or thereabouts left for me! Leah. xx
