6 whole months!
19 April 2013
Last weekend our wee offsprig turned SIX months! Can you believe it?
As some of yous might know, I was never a 'baby person', I didn't really get it and all that being prego and boob feeding and stuff made me squirm a bit, not for me thank you!
BUT I have to say that as soon as that babe pops out, your internal hard drive kicks in, and all those things I thought Id struggle with, seem like really obvious and natural. Not like how I expected at all. In fact, there was very little thinking and a lot of just doing.
So if any of you out there feel a little bit like I did about having a babe, don't worry is my advice.
My daughter is my little pal, my buddy...she's not a baby to me, she is a little person that came to live with us.
I used to get in the bath to wash her, but now she is getting too big and squirmy, always reaching for things she shouldn't. So I got one of those bath seat things.
I love making things with Pehr, whilst she is eating playing with her toys.
Btw, the Bumbo seat is really very handy.
On her six month 'birthday', we stopped by a pond in our van, and showed her ducks, ...she squealed and kicked her legs about.
having a nap in the back of the van on the first warm day of the year...
and I love making things for her, even though she will grow out of it next week.
and buying vintage clothes from the 70s.
These green gingham dungarees are from Little Vintage, so many lovely things in that shop!
She loves: standing up, being tickled, having a hug, her blanket, sweet potato, Plimsoll, her mobile, trying to eat everything, and sitting on Dad's shoulders.
She hates: being on her belly, some random people, mum wiping her face, and avocado.
colourful triangle quilt
I made this little bright triangle quilt after being inspired by a picture on pinterest. I dug out some scraps and got to it. I found triangles a little bit more tricky than squares, but I think its because some are cut on the bias, as the scraps were quite small. Anyhow, I don't care if its not perfect, its only going to get puked on, or spattered with carrot (carrot has the staining power of beetroot, a fact I didn't know before becoming a mama).
donkeys years ago, I bought a little orange and pink apron from a flea market, and it had a picture of the Isle of Wight on it (where I'm born and bred). I decided to hack it up, as although it was IOW souvenir, it was quite vile. So there are little snippets of the Island in the quilt, and even my hometown.
Its quite spongy so its great for playing on the floor.
...Now she has so many quilts! We have one for each chair!
tiny clothes
14 April 2013
Been feeling a bit stitchy lately as you can probably tell. This is pretty much turning into a sewing blog
these days! I'm learning as I go and Im really getting into making things. Yesterday I set about making a summer wardrobe for my offsprig. I chopped up an old tshirt dress and made some ickle trousers...
and I made a smock dress out of cotton...
I tried a few new 'techniques' like pin tucks, gathered pockets and made my own bias binding (I must be watching too much Great British Sewing Bee).
Its open at the back like the wool one I made before
Im quite chuffed with it, as I didn't use a pattern, and its actually quite neat for me.
I bought a pack of plain cheap babygrows to do stuff with as well. This one got a pocket. The others Im planning to dye and paint, oh yes!
I do love a pocket.
Ive been making a few toys too. I made a whole bunch of these critter, but the ones I made from cotton fabric turned out like mutants, these two made from old wool jumpers turned out ok though, even though I scorched them with the iron (sewing in the dark is not a good idea).
My Offsprig likes to eat the ears.
I'm doing some other bits and bobs too, which I'll show you later on hopefully ; )
Pehr's House
2 April 2013
Not even 6 months old, our daughter has already moved out and got a place of her own, her first step on the property ladder. She's going to show you around her new pad...
when she's a tad older...she might enjoy having a cup of tea whilst perusing her book of birds and sighing at the delicate waft of narcissi.
and getting a bit of shut eye in peace away from pesky parents, oohing and ahhing at her all day.
Yes, us bonkers mum and dad, built her, her very own house seeing as she can't have her own actual room for a while. We spent the Easter bank holiday beavering away...
...architectural plans.
Construction site was next to the nappy changing table.
Pehr was the project manager, and structural surveyor.
after Nao had finished the woodwork, it was my turn with the sewing machine.
we used 10oz cotton canvas (from an art suppliers). In hindsight, I should have gone with a lighter weight even though it was not as nice, it would have been a darn sight more easy to sew! The canvas frayed badly and it took me a while to use binding tape on all the seems. I really like the texture and feel of it though! (and smell, am I weird?)
anyways, after realising we had not bought quite enough material, and shortening the poles of the house to fit the length of the fabric...I finally set about cutting out the bits to make the door and windows. I made five windows, two on the front and one on the other sides.
The door was made from floral print fabric with a wooden pole inserted into the bottom seam.
It took me the best part of two days, as I always start projects in the evening and then my machine gets too loud for the upstairs neighbours. I put a pillow under my machine to soften the vibration, but it kept bobbing up and down all over the place! I couldn't really do this project in my shed because the tent became quite big to manoeuvre under the needle.
here it is at night with a lamp inside (excuse the mess all around)
I made window panes with cotton muslin (butter fabric from corner shop) with cotton tape sewn on for the bars.
I think really I am just acting out all the things I would have wanted when I was a nipper, in fact I can just about get in it, so I hope Pehr will invite me around for tea one day.
Of course, there's absolutely nowhere to put this house in our titchy flat, so I made a storage bag (as it is collapsable) and I also made a ground sheet, that attaches to the bottom with wooden toggles.
We are nuts, I know it.
*BTW the red lantern is LED not a real paraffin lamp. Please be VERY careful when using paraffin lamps in tents or caravans. I know thats obvious, but just anyways : )
Eastertastic!
1 April 2013
So, we celebrated Easter for the first time, it was very nice (although sadly, the telly was pants), lots of flowers and chocolate and cutting up tissue paper.
I made a hilarious Faberge-esque egg card for our little'un.
with pompoms and gold rick-rack, as you do.
Pehr cant have chocolate yet, so I gave her some small pressies, a bunny nightlight and rubber duckling. She did get a mug but we ate the egg.
I even swiped a few branches from the garden.
yes, spring has sprung. (even though its like bloody arctic outside).
Other than that, we have spent most of the holiday working on a bit of a project involving lots of sawing and lots of sewing. ...And I'm pretty nackered now, I can tell you!
